Gvaram Open Theater
Memorial site for Tzuk Eitan Operation
On the edge of the Gvaram Forest, a unique structure of an open theater, overlooking the landscape of the fields, has been abandoned for decades. The restoration, as part of a project commemorating the fallen soldiers of the Tzuk Eitan Operation, seeks to breathe life into this place and to restore its importance as a communal and unifying element. The site will be a focal point for various activities in the forest area.
We chose to place the memorial in the center of the theater, where visitors' eyes are drawn to. This memorial influences the structure of the theater, changes it, opens it up – breaks it out to the landscape. Through this action, the agricultural landscape of the Negev fields bears significance as an integral part of the commemoration. The visitor's experience is open to individual interpretation, beginning from the arrival from the forest to the collective space of the theater, the dramatic breakthrough into the landscape and the intimate experience in the forest.
